Alternative Materials
If 1020 steel round bar is not available or does not fully meet your specific requirements, there are several alternative materials:
- SAE 1018: This is also a low – carbon steel with a slightly lower carbon content (0.15 – 0.20%). It has similar mechanical properties to SAE 1020 but may offer better cold – forming capabilities in some cases. SAE 1018 can be used as a substitute in applications where formability is of prime importance.
- AISI 1022: AISI 1022 has a carbon content of 0.18 – 0.24%, very close to SAE 1020. It has good machinability and is often considered as an alternative when a material with comparable strength and workability is needed.
